Placement testing information

Students who wish to register in the English and Math series must first meet the prerequisites for those courses. Students must take the COMPASS test for English placement and the Math Placement test for Pre-Calculus I or Calculus I. Your high school counselor or teacher can help you identify the courses that have prerequisites and how you may fulfill these prerequisites in a timely manner.

For the English series, you will need a passing score of:

COMPASS Test

• 84 PASSES on the reading portion
• 75 PASSES on the writing portion

ACT Test

• 19 PASSES
• 500 on the reading portion if you have taken the SAT

For the Math series, you will need a passing score of:

Intermediate Mathematics Placement Test

• +18 PASSES - to admit to Pre-Calculus I, Math 153

Advanced Mathematics Placement Test

• +17 PASSES - to admit to Pre-Calculus II, Math 154
• +19 PASSES - to admit to Calculus, Math 172

COMPASS

• 50 PASSES - to admit to Math 101

If testing at CWU, all tests require proper photo ID and #2 Pencil and must be paid in advance at the cashier's office in Barge Hall room 104. The cost of the Math Placement Test is $25.00, the COMPASS is $15.00 each exam or $40.00 if taking all three at once.

For individuals coming to CWU, contact the Testing Center at 509-963-1847. For groups wanting to come to CWU for your test(s), contact Julie Patterson at 800-720-4503. She will coordinate a group testing time with the Assistant Director of testing. If you are coming as a group, you also might want to consider one of the following: a campus tour, a library tour, a visit to see the chimps, shop at the Wildcat bookstore, have lunch in one of our dining halls. Call Julie to arrange these various activities.
