CWU Summer Session 2011

CWU Summer Session '10

GENERAL REGULATION AND INFORMATION

Classification of Students

Class rank is based upon the number of quarter hours earned as follows:

Freshman 0-44.9
Sophomore 45-89.9
Junior 90-134.9
Senior 135 and above

Numbering of Courses

Courses are numbered as follows:

Freshman 100 through 199
Sophomore 200 through 299
Junior 300 thorugh 399
Senior 400 through 499
Professional Development 500
Graduate 501 through 700

Students may select courses one year ahead of their present status except when otherwise designated. Courses numbered 500 and above are normally for graduate students. Senior students may take 500 level courses only with the approval of both the department chair and the class instructor. The 500 level courses may be used for undergraduate credit or graduate credit (but not for both). In order to receive graduate credit, the student must be in his or her senior year of undergraduate work and must obtain approval from the associate vice president of Graduate Studies, Research and Continuing Education.

Student Load Policy

UNDERGRADUATE or POST-BACCALAUREATE

  • 15 credits - Standard undergraduate load
  • 18 credits or fewer - No permission required
  • 19-20 credits - Major advisor and department chair approval required or approval from the Academic Advising Center for undeclared majors
  • 20 or more credits - Major advisor and major department chair as well as the appropriate school dean or, in the case of undeclared majors, the associate vice president for undergraduate studies.

NOTE: A 2.8 or higher GPA is recommended for students seeking an overload.

GRADUATES

  • 10 credits - Normal graduate load
  • 14 credits or fewer - No permission required
  • 15 credits - Major department chair approval required
  • 16-19 credits - Major department chair or dean's approval required
  • 20 or more credits - College or graduate dean's approval required

The number of credits for which a student is fully registered determines full-time and part-time status. A full-time undergraduate is 12 credits or more. Three-quarter time is 9-11 credits. Half-time is 6-8 credits. A full-time graduate is 10 or more credits. Three quarter time is 7-9 credits. Half-time is 5-6 credits.

NON-MATRICULATED STUDENTS

Non-matriculated status is given to those persons who are not seeking degrees or certificates at CWU. Non-matriculated students do not need to go through the regular admissions process. They may apply through online Summer Session or at the back of this handbook on a space-available basis. Credits earned when in non-matriculated status may not be used to satisfy degree or certificate requirements unless the student matriculates, in which case a maximum of 45 credits may be applied toward a baccalaureate degree.

Financial Aid and Veterans Assistance

Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students must carry 12-quarter credit hours to be considered full-time students. Graduate students must carry 10-quarter credits. VA students must carry the same credit load to be full time; however, credits must be in their degree program. VA students should contact the Veterans Center located in PSYC 465 for further information to be in compliance with VA federal regulations to receive benefits. You may also email va@cwu.edu for further questions.

Audit

With the exception of laboratory courses, if space is available and permission is secured from the instructor, students eligible to enroll in a course for credit may enroll as an auditor. Full tuition is assessed for audits and no credit is earned.

When a student class load exceeds nine credits, including credits of audited courses, regular student fees must be paid. A student enrolled in nine credits or less, including audited courses, pays credit-hour fees. Instructors may not compel auditors to write papers or take examinations but may insist upon other course requirements. The instructor may request of the dean that the auditor be officially withdrawn from the course if these requirements are not met.

A student must register for an audited course by the last day of the change of schedule period.
